Coatings - FEPA F 240; - 200 mesh
on steel making electrodes (can be painted on). Needs
to be suspended in a colloidal carrier that will adhere
to graphite. Prevents oxidation by molten iron slag.
Refractory Anti-oxidant - 200; - 300 mesh
Used in formulas (only .5 to1 %) of castable cement
to line blast furnace throughs and runners. Forms B2O3,
a very tough corrosion resistant skin which prevents further
oxidation. Also used in alumina-carbon & magnesia-carbon
brick for blast furnace for same reason.
Ceramic parts - 400 mesh; - 10 micron
Hot pressing or cold press & sintering to make blasting
nozzles, crush rolls, wear parts.
Lapping FEPA F 220, F 240, F 280, F 320, F 400, F 500
Flat lapping on free-abrasive machine. If enough pressure
applied, can cut 3 times faster than SiC on very hard
metals and ceramics. Lasts about 5 times as long as SiC.
Nuclear pellets, control rods - 400 mesh
Hot press or cold press & sintered. Absorbs stray
neutrons in nuclear reactors.
Composites - FEPA F 400, F 500
Reinforces aluminium castings
Slurry-sawing - FEPA F 320, F 360, F400, F 500
Saws in oil slurry under steel blades (up to 240 blades
in a blade pack). Replaces SiC and lasts an extremely
long time (tests so far have not worn it out!). Cuts slightly
Marble polishing bricks - FEPA from F 24 to F 1200
Added to formula of marble polishing bricks to speed cut
and last many times longer.
Boronizing (also Boriding) - 200 mesh
Used in formulas with aluminium oxide, cryolite, and silicon
carbide to impregnate surfaces of wear parts (such as
oil well pipes and tools) with a thin layer of very hard
iron boride (Fe2B)
